Chances are if you're reading this post you may be interested in, or exploring, what it takes to become a field inspector, a.k.a. an insurance inspector.
I enjoy sharing my experiences and knowledge with anyone willing to learn what it takes to become an independent contractor in the field services industry.
If anything in this series of posts (see below) helps then I've accomplished my goal.
Inspections Midsouth began operations October 2018. At that time I was working a full time job and worked out an arrangement with my then current employer to work part time as I transitioned into insurance inspections full time.
I did this part time gig for 3 months, saving the cash I earned from inspections for working capital. In January 2019 I went full time doing insurance inspections.
Now don't get me wrong, it was very challenging at first. Learning each inspection company's requirements, inspection platforms, and the overall day to day of just running a business was interesting at best.
But I stuck with it and today I run a very successful insurance inspection business.
Over the next several posts I'm going to share my experiences, shortcuts, tools, rules, platforms, and software with anyone willing to learn; and wanting to start their own business as an insurance inspector.
Here are the topics I'll be covering:
- Setting the Stage – Starting the business and how I got the ball rolling.
- Tools of the Trade – I discuss all the equipment, apps, and software.
- Form and Function – Computer time, data entry techniques, expectations and calls.
- Rules of the Road – How I leverage technology in the most efficient way.
- Accountability – Tracking is a very important part of operations, getting paid is too.
- Vendor Spotlight – Vendors are your customers and I share the ins and outs of my favorites.
- Building a Brand – Starting from scratch with a website, a calling card, and reviews.
- An Eye on the Future – Expansion, technology, and fun stuff.
- A Day In the Life of an Insurance Inspector – A typical work day in the office and field.
- My Secret Sauce – A deep dive into the heart and soul of Inspections Midsouth.
Number ten is an idea that I've been toying with on what I consider to be the heart and soul of the business, my Excel workbook, my secret sauce. Stay tuned.
Five years and several modifications later this workbook is the only thing I use, and recommend, for keeping track of the insurance inspection business.
From inspections, mileage, production, to vendors, and a few other data sets, I can't imagine not using this tool to manage my business.
So if you're interested, stick around, read, absorb, and ask questions. I'm here to help. Time to Set the Stage…
