Answers to Commonly Asked Questions

What is a Field Survey or Service?

In the field services industry tasks are usually performed on residential or commercial properties that involve taking a sequence of photos requested by insurance underwriters after a policy has been written by an insurance agency. This is followed up with a few questions for owners and/or tenants about the property and/or contents.

What's Involved in a Field Survey?

When an insurance agent / agency write property coverage, the type of survey ordered can fall into several categories, property, liability, or package. There are other types of inspections that can be performed such as jobsite inspections or inland marine, to name a few.

Once a policy is written, an underwriter will step in and order a survey on the property from a third party vendor. They basically want to "see" what they are insuring based on the risk that was written.

A field inspector, like myself, will get assigned the inspection by the vendor. A call is made to the insured to set a date and time for the inspection. Once on site, photos are taken and a few questions asked to complete a report.

The data is then submitted back to the vendor that assigned the work and works its way through QA (Quality Assurance), checking for errors or missing information, before getting submitted to the vendor's customer, the underwriter.

How Long Does it Take to Complete a Survey?

Depending on the size of the property a survey can last 30 minutes to as long as an hour. Larger properties. i.e. apartment complexes, factories, or industrial / manufacturing facilities will often times have more than one building, which can take additional time gathering photos and information.

On average most surveys take less than 45 minutes, including the interview.

Do You Perform Home and/or Commercial Inspections?

No. These types of inspections are performed by licensed and insured inspectors.

Home and/or commercial inspections require state licensing (depending on where the property is located), plus the state can require Errors & Omissions and General Liability Insurance coverage.

Field surveys take less than an hour to complete. A full home / commercial inspection can take several hours.

Where Can I Find a Home / Commercial Inspector?

There are several organizations that cater to home and/or commercial inspectors. The two most commonly known organizations in the home inspection industry are 1) the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, or InterNACHI, and 2) the American Society of Home Inspectors, ASHI. Feel free to browse their websites and learn more about the services they offer consumers and to find certified inspectors in your area.

For commercial inspections visit the Certified Commercial Property Inspectors Association, or CCPIA. Run a search for an inspector near you.

As with anything, performing due diligence on any pay for performance service is always the best plan of action.
